Choosing The Right Brush For Grooming Your Dog

If you go to the pet store to find a brush, then youre more than likely overwhelmed with a gazillion brushes, each claiming to make your pets coat beautiful. But, we know that all pets coats are not alike. Some are long, some are short, some are fine, some are coarse, some are thick, and some are thin. Why would you use a brush made for long hair on a pet with short hair? Before you stress yourself out trying to choose a brush at the pet store, make sure you know what you are looking for.

First determine what type of coat your dog has. Its obviously easy to tell whether the hair is long or short. For the purpose of finding a brush, medium lengthened hair should fall under the long haired category. Next, is the hair thick or thin? If you are unsure, then run your fingers through it. If the hair engulfs your hand, then it is pretty thick. If you can see the dogs scalp easily or there is not much hair to run your fingers through, then its safe to say the hair is thin. Fine and coarse hair can be fairly tricky to determine if you are unfamiliar with the concepts. Grab a loose strand of hair, and roll it between your fingers. If you can easily feel the strand, then it is probably coarse. If you are rolling the hair between your fingers but can barely feel it, then it is probably fine. If you are unsure, then get a second opinion.

If your dog has long hair, then it probably tangles easily. For this reason, you need a brush that can brush through the hair without ripping out the tangles. The brush should be soft enough where it does not hurt your dog but firm enough to get through the long hair. The bristles should be fairly long to get down deep into the fur; this is especially true if the coat is also thick. There are a variety of long-haired brushes to choose from, including an oval pin brush or a slicker brush. Both brushes use stainless steel pins to help glide through the hair. If you choose a brush with pins, then make sure the ends are not sharp. You can find plastic-tipped pin brushes, protecting your dogs skin. As a rule of thumb, brush your own skin with the brush you choose it for your dog. If it does not feel too good on your skin, then it probably wont feel too good on your dogs skin, either.

If your dog has more than one layer of fur, coarse hair, or a really thick coat, then you need to look for a dog rake. Pets with thick and layered coats need to be brushed more often than short-haired pets in order to get rid of the excess fur. The dog rake gets deep down into the bottom layer of hair and combs out the mats, tangles, and loose fur. Once the rake removes the extra hair in the bottom layer, a pin brush can be used to brush the top. Dont assume that the dog rake is supposed to be hard or discomforting. Like using the pin brush, try the rake on your own skin first to see how it feels.

Dogs with short or fine hair are often the easiest to brush; there are not many tangles, mats, or extra hair. A standard dog comb can work wonders for a short-haired pooch. You can also use a brush if you prefer. If you choose to use a brush, then go with a rubber bristled or extra soft brush. If your dogs hair is short or fine, then the brush or comb will spend a lot of time touching his scalp. There is no reason your dog should be uncomfortable or in pain while being brushed.

An easy, quick way to pick a brush is based on the breed of your dog. Some breeds have double layers of fur, while others only have one. Call a groomer or vet and ask them what type of brush is best for the breed. Some brushes even list the breeds that it works well with on their labels. Knowing how often your dog sheds and how many layers of fur he has will help you choose the perfect brush.

Chia Seeds are Super Prostate Foods

Most people are familiar with the Chia Pet but very few people know about chia seeds. These tiny yet amazing seeds were used by Aztec and Mayan warriors to relieve their pain and boost their energy. Salvia Hispanica is the scientific name for chia seeds which come from a species of flowering plant in the mint or lamiceae family and originated in Mexico and South America. An effective prostate diet should include chia seeds due to their beneficial nutritional value. Chia seeds can be consumed in various ways such as adding them to your morning cereal, protein shake, or fruit juice. Additionally, chia seeds can be grounded into powder and added to all kinds of culinary cuisines.

The Aztec and Mayan warriors who were not aware of the modern day nutritional jargon such as Omega 3, fiber and antioxidants, realized the benefits received from these incredible chia seeds and understood the importance of including them in their daily diet. Chia seeds have the highest Omega 3 value of any grain, contain a good amount of fiber, and provide an excellent source of antioxidants. There is no written history regarding the prostate health of Aztec and Mayan warriors but its a safe bet to assume that with their daily consumption of chia seeds combined with their active lifestyle, they may have had a low incidence of prostate problems.

The popularity of chia seeds has steadily increased over the last several years and their migration from Mexico and South America to specifically Australia has been profound. Currently, Australia is the largest producer of chia seeds in the world and growing. According to several health statistics, Australia is in the top ten of nations with the highest incidence of prostate cancer so hopefully with the rise in popularity of chia seeds in that country it will make a dent in those numbers. However, the daily consumption of chia seeds alone is not going to solve your prostate problems. The adherence to a strict prostate diet along with super prostate foods such as chia seeds may be your ticket to a healthier prostate.

A diet for a healthy prostate is a low-glycemic or anti-inflammation diet that contains foods for a healthy prostate such as lycopene (tomatoes), cayenne peppers, or chia seeds just to name a few. Due to the chia seeds effective absorption of liquid, they have a smooth gelatin texture when combined with water, milk or tea. The popular ProstaBar from ProstaFoods also contains chia seeds and is a delicious nutrition bar that can be used as a snack in your prostate diet. Lastly, you can crush or ground the chia seed into a fine powder and use it as a seasoning for your chicken, fish, or lean red meat dishes. This historical super seed is an effective frequent urination diet and should be incorporated in your quest for a healthier prostate!

Cats Make Great Pets, You Know

Cats Make Great Pets, You Know

Cats are very good pets as they don't require as much attention as other options such as a dog. You don't have to walk the cat and you don't have to deal with it barking at everything that happens to walk by your home. Young cats are extremely playful and you can interact with them when you want to. However, most cats are content to play with toys or to be independent.

This doesn't mean that cats aren't excellent companions though. They can be silly at times and they often enjoy curling up on your lap and purring. Your cat won't come running when you are home at the end of day and knock you over. They also don't lick or bite so you won't have to worry about how they will interact with others when you have company. Cats always seem to be able to tell when you need some comfort.

Taking care of a pet can help a child to become more responsible but some pets just come with too much time required. A cat makes a perfect choice for children because they tend to take care of themselves. As long as they are given sufficient food and water they will remain happy. Indoor cats will have to be trained to use a litter box but most of them learn very quickly so you won't have to deal with cleaning up such messes around your home. However, you need to clean the litter box regularly because cats do not like to use a dirty litter box.

Cats are clean animals as they spend a large amount of time grooming themselves each day. In the majority of cases, cats lead a very happy and long life without too many problems. They don't cost very much because cat food and litter are very cheap. They don't require as many vet visits for routine shots either like dogs do which can become quite expensive.

For those that have problems with mice, cats make a great natural system for taking care of them. This means you won't have to deal with messy traps or dangerous poisons around your home. Many cat owners claim they haven't come across a mouse in their home for years with this line of defense.

Cats are very precious and beautiful animals as well. They have a gentle hum to them that can be relaxing for humans. They have coats in all colors as well as eyes that are very shiny and bright. Each cat has their own personality and you just can't help but adore them. There are many breeds of cats if you want a particular kind but some of the most beautiful cats are those that are mixed breeds.

Cats are very smart animals too so they will quickly catch up to what you like from them and what you don't based on the praise you give them. Contrary to popular belief, cats are obedient and they want their owner's to be happy with them. They will learn fast that you don't like them scratching on the furniture or putting their tail in your face while you are sleeping.

Carton Manufacturing

Types of Cartonboard

Solid Bleached Board

Solid Bleached Board (SBB) is made exclusively from bleached chemical pulp. It usually has a white pigment coated top surface, comprising two or three layers and some grades are also coated on the reverse side. SBB has excellent printing, structural design and embossing characteristics making it particularly suitable for luxury products and for contents where preservation of product aroma, flavour and hygiene are critical. Examples of carton manufacturings where SBB is often used include perfumes, cosmetics, chocolates, pharmaceuticals, cigarettes and frozen food packaging. The product is also referred to as SBS or GZ.

Solid Unbleached Board

Solid Unbleached Board (SUB) is typically made entirely from unbleached chemical pulp and is brown in colour. It is also referred to as SUS or UZ. For many carton applications the printing surface of this product has either a white pigment coating or a bleached chemical pulp top layer plus coating.

Folding Box Board

Folding Box Board (FBB) comprises middle layers of mechanical pulp sandwiched between layers of bleached chemical pulp. The top layer, or, liner, is usually white pigment coated in two or three layers. The reverse side is typically cream or manilla in appearance as the back layer of chemical pulp is translucent allowing the colour of the middle layers to show through. Where the reverse side or back layer of chemical pulp is thicker and/or white pigment coated, so that the appearance of both sides is white, the FBB is described as a White Black Folding Box Board or GC1.

FBB can be plastic extrusion coated, laminated with other materials, and given other treatments to enhance its appearance and functional properties. A wide range of applications for this product include cosmetics, chocolate, sugar confectionary, medical, healthcare, toiletries, dry foods, chilled foods, coffee, tea, biscuits, baked goods, clothing, toys, games, photographic products and frozen food packaging.

White Lined Chipboard

White Lined Chipboard (WLC), also known as GD, has middle layers of recycled pulp made from mixed recovered papers or carton manufacturing waste. The top layer comprises either pulp made from selected recovered paper or bleached chemical pulp, with selected recovered paper also used for the back layer. The overall content of recycled pulp varies from about 80% to 100%. The top surface will, typically have two or three layers of white pigment coating and it is now usual for most WLC to have a layer of white pigment coating on the reverse side and this is known as GT. WLC can be made with a white, grey or, sometimes brown reverse side. Plastic extrusion coatings, paper and aluminium foil laminations, and other functional coatings may be added.

WLC is used in a wide range of applications which includes cereals, dry foods, frozen and chilled foods, detergent powders, confectionary outers, toiletries, household goods, electrical, engineering products, car spares, DIY, gardening, toys and games. Special treatments are available to provide fat resistance and other barrier properties for uses in fast food, pet food and soap packaging.

What other boards are used for cartons?

A small number of cartons are made with 100% recycled unlined chipboard. This has a grey appearance on both sides. Cartons can also be manufactured using microflute corrugated board. This is often used to provide additional protection for fragile products such as glass, porcelain, and sensitive electronic and electrical goods, whilst at the same time providing a high standard of print and varnish appearance.

What developments have there been recently in carton manufacturing?

Investment continues in computer controlled processing and on-machine quality monitoring, both of which have lead to productivity improvements and even more consistent quality. New forming and press section techniques have resulted in improved strength characteristics with the possibility of grammage reduction and less packaging overall.

The industry has eliminated the use of pulp bleached with chlorine gas. This has resulted in reducing the environmental impact of bleaching in lakes, rivers and estuaries in the vicinity of pulp mills.

There have been developments in surface coating methods, coating formulations and board machine processing, using techniques such as surface glazing and brushing, which have increased smoothness, whiteness and sheet stability. This has improved visual appearance and printing capability.

Caring For The Elderly Using Video Monitors

There is an all new approach for family members trying to care for their elderly parents who are staying with them. Using a baby video monitor located in their room works very well to keep an eye on them. You cannot always be right there with them. But with a video monitor you can see and hear them from any room in the house in case they need your assistance. It is very comforting for them knowing you can hear them as well as see them in case you are needed. Older parents can easily fall and injure themselves if they are recovering from surgery or some other illness. So being able to monitor an elderly adult can be so helpful for them as well as for you.

Baby video monitors can be such a great help for parents. Of course they are most widely used for monitoring a baby when the parent is unable to be in their room. And you can also keep a watchful eye on them when they are sleeping at night. But now they can do double duty making it such a versatile tool. The video monitor is so helpful for watching baby, for keeping an eye on an older child playing in another room and now is becoming widely used in helping to care for elder parents and relatives who become sick and might need you. A video monitor will help you to be able to carry on with your daily household duties and activities while still monitoring your sick or disabled family member. This gives you peace of mind while accomplishing your tasks.

There are many options to choose from when deciding on which video monitor is right for your needs. Monitors with multiple channels of nine hundered MHZ will help to avoid interference from cell phones, scanners and wireless phones. This will give a clearer signal with less static. An on and off switch with a light indicator that lets you know when your battery is running low is a great feature. This allows you to change the batteries before they go dead. They can come with portable receivers so you can carry it around the house with you from room to room. Some even have belt clips. There are video monitors available with automatic infrared night vision allowing you to see at night. Some monitors are cabable of scanning the room which is a great safety security feature. Baby video monitors have become a useful and helpful tool in the family home.

Can I Put My Pet In My Will

Can I Put My Pet In My Will

Have you ever wondered what to do with your pet if you suddenly passed away? Who is going to take care of it? What if it gets sick and needs medical attention? Who is going to pay the medical bills? Who is going to pay for routine shots? These are many questions you may ask yourself in thinking about this confusing topic.

The Uniform Trust Act of 2000 does not allow you to will property to an animal per se, but it allows you to set up a trust for the continuing care of your pet. The Act itself is an example of the increased recognition of animal interests.

As of right now, there are roughly thirty-one states that now recognize pet trusts. These trusts allow for the owner to name a pet as a beneficiary and to name a trustee to take care of the pet.

Make plans for your pet.

According to an article written by Eileen Ambrose of The Baltimore Sun, it is important that people make plans for what will happen to their pet. And whether they end up creating a pet trust, setting money aside in a will for care or use some other means, the issues owners face will be similar. For instance, pet owners need to find a caretaker and someone to manage the money left behind for the pet's benefit. Usually the same person handles both roles. Look for someone who is responsible, capable of handling money and likes animals.

Other suggestions in the article encourage you to:

- Name one or two backups in case the trustee cannot fulfill the job.

-Make sure there is enough money to cover pet expenses.

- Write a care plan, basically a memo detailing the veterinarian's name.

- Include in the care plan the pet's routine, medications, likes and dislikes.

Drafting a Trust

You will want to include specific information in the trust.

- The name and address of a trustee and an alternate trustee.

- The name and address of the caregiver and an alternate caregiver. (It may be beneficial to name the same person as the trustee and the caregiver)

- Detailed information on the identity of your pet. (microchip or papers)

- The standard living and care you wish for your pet.

- A detailed description of the property that will fund the trust.

- Information on how the remainder of the trust should be distributed once your pet dies.

- Instructions on the final disposition of your pet's body.

According to an article by Richard Willing of USA Today, the average amount left to pets is about $25,000. It was also stated in the article that according to a 2000 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association that Americans own roughly 68 million dogs and 73 million cats. The impulse to protect them after one's demise has always been strong and, for some, overwhelming.

Can Dogs Get Heartburn Too

Can Dogs Get Heartburn Too

Can Dogs Get Heartburn Too

Your dog can get heartburn too, just like you can. It has the same causes as it does in humans, but the sad part is, your canine is unable to tell you just what is wrong.

Heartburn is cause by a a sphincter muscle located between the esophagus and the stomach. Certain foods and underlying medical conditions can soften or relax the lower esophageal sphincter so that it does not close all the way after food has passed through it to the stomach.

This causes stomach acid to come back through the sphincter leading to burning and irritation to the dog's esophagus.

What are the symptoms?

A canine with heartburn will exhibit signs and symptoms of vomiting, loss of appetite, and decreasing weight. Other symptoms include pain, drooling, and fever.

The risks for acid reflux include dogs who are obese and receiving poor nutrition. Younger dogs are more susceptible to heartburn than older dogs. Table food is not recommended. Food that is specifically formulated for your pet is what should be given.

In addition, portion sizes and how often your dog is fed are dependent upon your pet's age and size. Do not over feed as this will only exacerbate the acid reflux.

Treatment:

Your dog can be treated with over the counter medications such as zantac, pepcid AC, and reglan. Reglan works by increasing peristalsis to keep food traveling through the digestive tract, thus keeping the stomach emptied to prevent heartburn.

In cases where your canine has developed an ulcer, Carafate is the preferred treatment. Carafate will adhere to the ulcer area and act a protective patch.

You will need to consult with your veterinarian before giving these medications to your canine. Your vet can inform you of the correct dosages to administer.

Natural remedies:

A great natural remedy for canine acid indigestion is slippery elm bark and marshmallow herbs. These help to cool and soothe the throat. Small doses of Tumeric help to relieve acid indigestion. Take care not to give too much, as it can lead to liver damage.

Prevention:

Heartburn in dogs is preventable by making a few lifestyle changes. Avoid giving your dog a diet of rich foods, as they are more difficult to digest. Instead, switch to a rice based diet that is more easily digested. Be sure your dog get plenty of exercise to help keep the weight down. Increased weight is a contributor to heartburn.

Can Cats and Dogs Experience Depression10 Ways to tackle your Pets Blues Away

No one greets you at the door. The rattle of the leash goes unnoticed. Even a steak bone fails to generate much excitement. If your pouty pet doesnt start showing some enthusiasm soon, youre going to change her name to Debby downer or Gloom and Doom.
Its not uncommon for pets to come down with the blues. Caused by such things as illness, loneliness, lack of exercise or even winter darkness, depression can make pets lethargic, mopey and sad.
Sudden changes in lifestyle can also cause emotional upheavals in pets. Cats and dogs may get depressed following the death of one of their friends, for example, or after moving to a new house. Cats can get depressed just from having the furniture rearranged. To raise your pets spirits, heres what I recommend.
1. Try to make every day a play day. Throwing yourself into some wholehearted play with your pet is one of the best ways to take her mind off her troubles. Perhaps getting down on the floor for a tickle and tummy rub being silly might lift her spirits. Let your baby know its okay to play.
2. Reflect some fun. Putting up a mirror where your pet can see her own reflection will give her a sense that shes not alone and help keep her from feeling lonely.
Go for a walk. Taking your pet outside for a vigorous romp does more than get her out of the house. Exercise also stimulates the release of endorphins, chemicals in the body that heighten good feelings.
3. Dont reward the moping. About the worst thing you can do when your pet is depressed is stroke, pamper of otherwise reward her for feeling bad. This could only make things worse.
Its good to give her attention, but only if you stay upbeat and cheerful. If youre enthusiastic, theres good chance your pet will be, too.
4. Make your friends exciting. Its common for pets to feel left out when someone new like a boyfriend or another petenters the picture. We are our pets loved ones, and they dont want to share our love with other pets or other people.
To help your pet get used to new friends, try ignoring your pet for a little bit, when the two of you are alone. Then turn on the attention when the new person (or pet) is around. Go for a walk. Have a play session on the floor. Or just give her and extra treat. Pretty soon your pet will associate the new person with good time and will be less likely to mope.
5. Plant surprises. For pets, home is where the good smells (and treats) are. Some vets recommend, salting the new place with exciting toys or tasty treats, which shell discover on her own.
6. Cheer her up with music. Cats and dogs enjoy music and are less likely to feel depressed when something pleasant is playing. Classical musicsuch as gentle flutes and string instrumentscould have a relaxing effect.
7. Play it their way. Rather than playing human music for your pets, why not play some of their own? The Internet has a variety of different cat or dog sounds playing to a melody. You Tube is a great resource for finding music for your pets.
8. Play a movie on T.V. that has other animals in it. You can turn on the video when you leave the house in the morning or set a timer so it comes on later in the day.
9. Give time to mourn their lost companion. Its common for pets to suffer deep depression after losing a friend. Pets demonstrate a deep love for each other, just as people do. Theres no instant fix for grief, but giving your pet plenty of love will help him get through the difficult time.
10. Give her a new friend. While its not always possible to replace a pet, many cats and dogs will feel better when they have another furry companion to play with.
A good idea to visit the veterinarian if none of these strategies are working and the pet continues to be lethargic. Depression in pets is usually nothing more than a short-term bout with the blues; it can also be a warning sign that something serious is wrong.
A cat or dog that is lethargic, not eating and generally moping about could have a physical problem, like thyroid disease, pancreatitis or even heart-worms.
Even if the problem turns out to be behavioral or emotional, the symptoms of depression, such as not eating, can make your pet sick. Dont take chance. For dogs, call your vet if hes mopey and hasnt eaten in 48 hours. For cats, 36 hours is the maximum.

Buying A Condo When You Own Pets

Buying A Condo When You Own Pets

Buying A Condo When You Own Pets

If you're looking to buy a condo when you own a dog or cat, tread carefully. There are a lot of things that can seriously jeopardize your peaceful pet ownership if you do not make sure that you abide by the condo rules. There are several preventative measures that you can take when purchasing a condo to safeguard your pet ownership rights.

Don't just go on what an agent tells you about the condo; do your own research. Even the sight of pets in the building or in the building's windows is not an indication that pet ownership is allowed. Ask to see the condo's declaration or bylaws. Get an updated copy of the CC&Rs (covenants, conditions and restrictions) to peruse.

If there are any restrictions on pets, what are they? Are you prohibited from owning an animal over a certain weight? What about a specific breed? Many condos outright ban certain breeds of dogs. Are there types of animals not permitted? For instance, will the condo allow cats but not dogs? If there is anything unclear about the restrictions or rules, have it clarified in writing.

The letter of the law when you first buy a condo isn't everything. Condo boards can change laws. Therefore you need to know what the prevailing attitudes towards pets are. If your condo building has security staff, ask them what the attitudes are about pets. Ask your potential neighbors. Also, you can get a lot of information from perusing the minutes of the last 3 or so meetings of the board. Check to see if there are a lot of pet complaints and what was done about them. Do the solutions seem to be solving the problems? Do people generally seem to have a good attitude towards pets?

Do not buy a condo with a "No Pets" rule or restrictions that would exclude your pet(s) and expect to "fly under the radar". Expensive lawsuits have been brought against homeowners because of this and most of the outcomes have favored the condo boards. You would have to prove that the condo board gave you inaccurate information or knew about the pet and turned a blind eye. This can be expensive, difficult and time consuming. It's better that you spend more time searching for a condo complex with rules that support your pet ownership.

With some careful searching and an understanding agent, you will eventually find a condo where you can keep your pet(s) safely and comfortably. Once installed, do your part to support condo pet ownership by training your pets, keeping them under control and responsibly disposing of their wastes. This will make pet ownership a positive thing for everybody and encourage the condo association to keep the units open to pets.

Bunny Care - Tips & Tricks What To Do And Avoid To Do

Thinking of bringing home a bunny for a pet? Well, it entails knowledge about bunny care. Keep in mind that rabbits are not usual home pets although they are warm and friendly. A few things must be remembered when starting to care for a rabbit, especially for first time pet owners. Learning what bunnies normally eat is ultimately essential. Hay is a big source of rabbit's food nutrition. Grass is also one. They are not only a part of good bunny care but they also provide your pet with something to chew on.

Aside from the very essential foodstuff, water is similarly essential to remember when considering proper bunny care. These adorable creatures adore water. Though rabbits with further green diet may not basically need to gulp water often, a fresh and sanitary water source in which they can drink from is absolutely fine.

As mentioned earlier, hay, along with grass, is a chief source of rabbit nutrition. Even so, there is more to bunny care. With adequate source, it is ideal to feed pet rabbits two cups of vegetables and fruits day after day. Bunnies also love carrots, grapes, apples and bananas.

And there is more. When bringing home a pet bunny, decide on its shelter. When you decide to keep your rabbit indoors, thus you may not require cage. But should you decide otherwise, a bigger pen is better because of many reasons like, more space for your pet to roam as well and it would be a better decision because later, if you would decide to get more bunnies, you will not build another for the new ones in the future.

Suitable bunny care likewise includes a sanitary shelter. Cleaning the pen is necessary not just for your benefit. A bunny's dirt can stink very badly and could eventually affect the good health of your pet. If you desire to keep your pet in the garden or backyard, be sure to provide a pen mostly made for the environment and weather outside.

Bunny care has always been a major part of raising a bunny. Cages for raising a bunny outside must be built from solid wood and reliable materials for longer use and sturdiness to withstand the pets' activities and provide comfort as well. Ensuring that you got the best materials for your rabbit cage is foremost and essential to assure security from risky elements and potential predators that can harm or kill your bunny.

Bullfrog Information

The bullfrog is the largest frog in North America. The bullfrog population is not as abundant as it used to be because people kill these frogs to eat their legs! This is a fascinating creature that needs to be protected.

The bullfrog is most common in the Southern part of the United States. They are known for their large size, throaty call and their extraordinary leaping ability. Bullfrogs can grow to be six inches in length, but when they stretch out their legs this adds another seven to ten inches in length. They can also jump up to six feet away!

The frog's calls are heard throughout the summer when they are mating. The male makes a call to get females and then the females respond with another call. Sometimes you may see two males fighting because they are very territorial. The frogs are not seen in the winter because they are hibernating.

If you want to keep these frogs, it is best if they have a shallow pool that they can get in and out of very easily. Try not to use tap water in the pool because it has chlorine in it, which could hurt them. Tadpoles are especially sensitive to this. To get rid of the chlorine in your water, either filter it or let it sit out for two weeks. Frogs like the water to be around eighty degrees. Only fill the pool so that the depth covers the frogs half way. You should also put pebbles or stones on the bottom.

If you keep Bullfrogs in captivity, you can feed them all kinds of insects, baby mice and feeder fish. Be careful if you are going to keep more than one frog together, because they will usually eat anything that is smaller than them, including other frogs.

When the female bullfrog lays eggs, she can lay up to 20,000 eggs at once. These eggs will then become tadpoles. The tadpole stage lasts between six months and two years, depending on the weather. When the eggs first hatch, the babies cannot swim so they just cling to plants. Very soon they begin to develop hind legs. Once these legs are fully-grown, they use them to swim and push through the water. The tadpole continues to develop into a frog by having skin grow over the gills, having lungs develop, having front legs grow and having the tail disappear.

If you want to take care of tadpoles, you should keep them in an aquarium. The water in the tank should be filtered. Don't put any fish in the aquarium with the tadpoles because they might hurt them. It is best if you only put between two and four tadpoles in a tank together. They will swim together and are very active if kept in small groups. Tadpoles can be fed pellets, flake food, water plants and algae. When they get bigger you can also feed them bloodworms.

It is so amazing the way a frog changes from an underwater creature to a land creature. They are very fascinating and fun to see in the wild. Fortunately, laws have been passed to regulate how many frogs can be caught and eaten. Hopefully this will help build their population back up.

Building Pet Stairs or a Ramp

Building Pet Stairs or a Ramp

They say that a pet is a man's best friend. Well they say a dog is actually. Many people love their pets and know that their pets have some kind of affection towards them in a special way that allows them to be able to share moments and time together. Your pet may be the kind that follows you around the house or the yard and you may want to build or assemble a set of stairs or a ramp for your pet to be able to cross over certain obstacles.

To do this, you will need a number of things to be in place before you can actually build or assemble one. Although you do not need that much experience to build your own pet stairs, you will need to have a level of understanding about your pet that will allow you to start the process.

- Know your pet's confidence factor. Many people do not consider that their pets have an inner fear. Your pet's trust in you is probably quite solid but when you bring a new learning experience or skill such as learning to climb a set of stairs, it may take some time for your pet to get used to the new change. Your pet may be the kind that is better at certain motor skills and will gladly use the set of stairs.

- Find out what is required to get your stair case together: Do you know what things you will need to make the pet stairs? You will probably be using things like wood, nails, some staples, paint, carpet or a covering material and other things. With a quick search on the internet, you will be able to find a number of designs and DIY (do-it-yourself) projects that you can complete yourself in a short period of time.

- Take the measurements that are needed: Is your pet big? Is it small and light? Your pet stairs will be affected by this. You need to take measurements of the exact location of what you will install the stairs. Most pet stairs use 2 steps but some pets are shorter and need more steps, you will probably need to find a plan or project that will suit your pet.

- Making the final choice: If you have gone through the practical steps and looked at the options clearly, you will need to make a practical decision, will it be stairs or a ramp. Though a ramp will require a different design and some more work research to make it, your pet may appreciate it more than the steps. Remember that your pet has some sense of its surroundings as well and you wouldn't want to embark on a building project that will not be effect.

Essentially your pet is still under your control and depending on your unique surroundings, you may choose between the two options, building the Pet Stairs is obviously the easier of the two but it will again depend on your own practical requirements.

Bringing a Shih Tzu Puppy Home

The Shih Tzu breed of dogs is named as teacup because they are very small in size. This breed has come from different Chinese dog breeds like the Lhasa Apso as well as Pekingese. They are very cute. So each person would like to have them as their pet. They are so tiny that they will fit themselves in a teacup very easily. After you have brought a teacup puppy home, you need to have great responsibility for the puppy as an owner.

Only playing with the Shih Tzu puppy is not enough. You have to see to it how the puppy easily gets used to the new environment. For this, firstly you have to provide a corner to the teacup puppy and build a puppy play area there. You have to see that the floor of the corner is not carpeted and tiled. This will enable you to clean the excrete of the puppy easily. It is a very wise idea to prevent the puppy from going outside the puppy play area till it is housebroken. This is because the puppy may hurt itself. Also the puppy will feel comfortable in the puppy play area. If the home is small, you can create the puppy play area in a crate where it can stay for the whole day when nobody is at the home and if it is large you can buy a bigger puppy play fence. It will help the puppy to play and exercise when you are not at home.

Besides a comfortable bed, nutritious food, clean drinking water, you should also provide the teacup puppy with toys in the playpen so that it can play with them and not get bored. But as the toys provide fun to it, in the same way it can be dangerous also. So as an owner you should be very careful in choosing safe toys for your puppy that cannot be torn apart and swallowed by the tiny pet. Examples of safe toys include tennis ball, dog treats etc.

It is important to train the dog in every aspects in its earlier days otherwise later on it will not listen to you. Again, as an owner you should choose a cute and meaningful name for your puppy.

Teacups need love and care, and give the same back to their owner! If you are looking for buying a teacup puppy, contact us now at mspuppyconnection.com

Breathing Paint Fumes - What's at Risk and How to Eliminate Paint Fumes From Your Air

Paint is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to give a room or home a quick makeover. But what do you risk health wise by inhaling paint fumes and how can you eliminate them?

What you risk depends on the paint that was used. Oil paint or any paint that contains volatile organic chemicals has elements in it that evaporate easily into the air. Examples are solvents, thinners that maintain an even consistency, and drying agents that help the paint dry faster. These are often the ingredients that off gas and can make paint fumes so harmful.

You may first notice a headache, watery or burning eyes or nose, dry throat, light headedness, dizziness, or nausea. This is your body's way of saying get me out of here and away from these paint fumes! Generally these symptoms will disappear if you are only exposed to the fumes for a very short time. But often paint will off gas fumes for weeks, forcing you and all who live in the newly painted space to continue to inhale these fumes over a long period of time.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to these fumes because their respiration is comparatively fast, and their bodies are smaller which means their bodies are subjected to much more of the paint fumes than a healthy adult. Pregnant mothers also risk harm to the developing fetus, and continued exposure can interfere with normal growth and development. Older adults are also more at risk many times because of pre-existing conditions such as heart problems, respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis, and/or an immune system that is in some way compromised.

There are paints available now that contain low and even no volatile organic chemicals. They are more expensive, but certainly worth the extra money for the health advantages they provide. But if you've moved into an apartment or newly constructed home, you may not have control over the paint that was used. So unless you act, you and your family may in fact be forced to just live in this unhealthy environment.

A high efficiency particle arresting (abbreviated as HEPA) air purifier that has a filter that specifically targets and removes these fumes can clear the air and make the air quality in your home healthy again. How does it do this? It is designed to run 24 hours a day to continuously removing these paint fumes from your air as soon as they off gas.

By opting for a HEPA air purifier you also get the added advantage of a cleaner that can remove other household particulates that may have resulted from new construction or a home makeover. This filter by definition is designed to remove normal household pollutants such as household dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, pollen, pet dander, bacteria and viruses all as small as .3 microns.

The best of these air cleaners contain 4 filters built into one easy-to-change canister, each with a different purpose making it a powerful yet compact and very efficient solution to removing paint fumes from your air.

Birthday Parties in Austin, Texas

Birthday Parties in Austin, Texas

Unlike childhood birthday parties of yesteryear, which revolved around a birthday cake and a small gathering of mostly family and a friend or two, today's parties require a bit more. Generally, all of your child's acquaintances from school are invited to the party, which should at the very least have a theme if not an exotic locale. What is a parent to do when faced with the monolithic task of planning the party of the century for their toddler, without the time or even energy to begin thinking about doing so? Fear not, Austin offers plenty of kiddie-party options.

If your kid is under the age of 10, Kiddie Acres makes a fun spot for birthday celebrating. Located on Howard Lane in Northern Austin, Kiddie Acres is a small amusement park with only age appropriate rides, all seemingly vintage and well maintained and colorful. The park includes a mini ferris wheel, boats, planes, cars, a carousel, a train, as well as a real pony ride. They sell packages of tickets that you can dispense to your guests and provide large picnic tables where you can set up the cake and lemonade.

If your party occurs in the heat of the summer, you could consider some of the excellent indoor options. Pump It Up, located in central Austin, boasts a wide variety of inflatables. Kids are ushered from room to room to try out all of the offerings before returning to a party room you can serve the requisite pizza and cake.

In the same vein, Inflatable Wonderland in Lakeline Mall provides a smaller scale selection of inflatables. While the party is less intimate, the space provides discounts during the week for the budget conscious as well as inflatables appropriate for kids under 3. Picnic tables are available to accomdate cake serving and present collection.

The Austin Park and Pizza also rents out private rooms for parties. Your room overlooks the arcade area, and included with the package are armbands for your guests that give them access to their arcade, laser tag, and outdoor attractions, including bumper boats, a teacup ride, and miniature golf. Guests can also help themselves to all-you-can eat pizza, salad, and dessert.

For a less pizza intensive gathering, RadiJazz Playnasium in the Lincoln Village Shopping Center is a good choice. The indoor playscape features a riverscape, volcano, lavascape, and a lounge area where you can prepare your party and later enjoy cake.

If you prefer a more active birthday, the Crenshaw Athletic Club on Fairview Drive can be rented for several hours, with facilitators leading children through age appropriate activities in the gym, such as an obstacle course, trampolines, swinging on ropes across a pool filled with balls, and other similar activities. A small cottage can be used to host the cake eating and includes bathrooms and a small jungle gym outdoors. There is even a handy tree for stringing up the ubiquitous piata.

If you are willing to go a bit further afield, the Little Buckaroo Ranch, located about 30 minutes outside of Austin on Hamilton Pool Road, offers a variety of party themes, pony riding, painting a pony, barnyard buddies, and a square dance party. Party participants can ride miniature ponies, pet farm animals, and then dig into cake. The ranch chuckwagon offers hot dogs, chips, punch and bottled water.

Basic Bearded Dragon Care Guidelines

Basic Bearded Dragon Care Guidelines

Reptiles make great pets for those with the proper mindset, and Bearded Dragons are among the most popular of those reptile pets. They are sturdy, just small enough, and eat simple, variant diets. With a lifespan of up to fifteen years, they can be a good long term pet, but only with the proper care and attention to the lifestyle and necessities of their diets.

Because they are desert creatures, Bearded Dragons are used to a substantial influx of sunlight. Without the vitamins and calcium acquired from that absorption, Bearded Dragons can become ill quickly. For that reason, keeping a UVA or UVB light on them for the sunlight hours of their day is vital. Often, vitamin supplements mixed into their diets are good as well. Diseases related to the bones' weakening through Vitamin D, Calcium and Phosphorous deficiencies can include Metallic Bone disease and various other painful issues in your bearded dragon.

Keeping your bearded lizard's enclosure clean is incredibly important. The possibility of parasites or diseases infiltrating their environment through food or enclosure additions is constant, and for that reason you should keep a close eye on your lizard for any signs of these diseases. Things like weight loss or unhealthy droppings can be directly attributed to a parasite introduced to their space. If you ignore the signs, the parasite could eventually cause the death of your bearded dragon, or at least extreme health problems. A veterinarian can offer quick and easy solutions for treating these issues.

The environment itself, while fairly stable most of the time can cause problem with your beard dragon's respiratory system if not kept stable. As a cold blooded creature, low levels of heat and too much moisture can spell immediate health problems for your bearded dragon. These can include anything from clogged nostrils to raspy breathing. Immediate care with antibiotics and the adjustment of your tank's conditions will repair such issues usually without further harm.

If you decide to breed your bearded dragons, or if your female merely happens to get pregnant, it is important to give her a good, comfortable nesting place. Without the nesting place, she could suffer from egg binding, mostly common the first time a female breeds. Besides nesting areas, it is important to ensure your female dragon is mature enough for mating. Immediately see a vet in this case, as egg binding most often leads to death.

A recent problem to arise in bearded dragons is adenovirus. Preying on smaller animals, adenovirus is hard to catch because of its similarity to other health problems. If problems persist after careful treatment, quickly see a vet. As a fatal disease, adenovirus is often not caught until the lizard has already passed.

When purchasing a bearded dragon, keep in mind that these wonderful pets are no different than most other pets in that they require careful attention to keep from becoming ill. With proper attention and care, a bearded dragon can be expected to live a long and healthy life.

Avoid the Tree Removal Fail and Call the Experts

Avoid the Tree Removal Fail and Call the Experts

As you looked up at the tree in your yard, you noticed something.

The branch that looked ok before, doesnt look so hot now. Maybe its closer to your roof than it was.

Or its hanging on by a leaf and could fall onto your driveway. And hit your car.

Either way, that branch has got to go. But if you do it yourself, you will likely do more harm than good.

Heres why you should hire a professional arborist.

A pound of cure

Weve all heard the saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In the case of the trees in your yard, its more than just a pound.

The average oak tree can weigh thousands of pounds.

OK, so maybe only a branch will fall down. But its twenty feet above your head.

Thats plenty heavy enough to possibly do some serious damage.

Its also impossible to predict what will happen during the next storm. Those branches may hang on for another six months.

Or, it could be six minutes.

Do you want to take that chance? If not, make sure youre taking care of your trees.

Seasonal maintenance

You want the trees in your yard looking beautiful year-round.

You like watching the trees come to life in the spring. Lush, green leaves provide shade on a hot summers day.

In the fall, the oranges and reds are a perfect look when theres a nip in the air.

To keep your trees looking their best, you need to maintain them.

Some of the smaller parts, closer to the ground, you might be able to take care of yourself. But the Department of Agriculture suggests hiring a professional for anything over 2 in diameter.

And, did you know that if you trim a tree incorrectly you can inadvertently damage it?

Once a tree is damaged, its more likely to have issues and possibly even die.

Proper pruning also encourages new growth and can help trees withstand the winter better.

A professional arborist will know whats best for the size and type of trees you have.

Not just for decorative trees

Shade in the summer is good, but a fresh apple from your tree in the fall is delicious.

Proper, seasonal maintenance also applies to your fruit trees. If you prune them at the right time, it will encourage fruit production for the following year.

Preventative maintenance

Along with knowing the best and safest way to trim your trees, a professional can assess their current health.

They can recognize signs of pest damage, or conditions like Dutch elm disease.

If those cant be corrected or controlled, they can perform a safe tree removal.

How often do my trees need trimming?

Typically, once a year will be sufficient.

The Arbor Day Foundation suggests avoiding pruning your trees in the fall. Trees are slower to heal in the fall, and it may promote the spread of fungus.

And of course, youll want to contact a professional sooner if you see limbs that:

May overhang walkways
Are near power lines
Were damaged by a storm or the wind

Safety first

Trimming a tree branch isnt like cutting one of your shrubs or hedges.

There are factors to take into account like:

Where will the limb fall once its cut?
How will it affect the rest of the tree?
Is it caught up in other branches that will also fall?

A professional knows how to assess the situation properly for safe removal.

Dont let it be a shocking experience, either

Trees can also be growing near your electrical and phone lines. Or, maybe theres a storm and the branches break and hit the lines.

Either way, you want to avoid having that happen.

Keeping your trees trimmed correctly can prevent a middle-of-the-night problem. And if it does happen, your utility companys emergency line is your first call.

Downed electrical lines are a serious hazard the ground can be energized up to 35 away.

Make sure you know what to do in case this dangerous situation occurs.

Emergency removal

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, Mother Nature has a different idea.

The wind was howling and a branch was torn loose. And it landed on your roof.

Not only do you need that branch off the roof before it falls, but it needs to be done correctly.

If you decide to climb up on a ladder and yank it off the roof, now you have two risks:

Falling off the ladder
Further damaging your roof

A professional arborist can help minimize the damage by removing the limb safely and quickly.

Hiring a pro can actually save you money

You might be a pretty handy DIY kind of person.

And your budget is tight, so you try to do things yourself. But tree trimming isnt a time to cut corners, so to speak.

It requires specialty tools and experience the average homeowner doesnt have.

Things like:

Chainsaws
Rope and pulleys
Truck capable of hauling away the wood if needed
The know-how to use all these safely and effectively

DIY is great for painting and other stuff but you should hire a professional for your trees.

Insurance

Another way a certified arborist can save you money: insurance.

What if you decided to trim that tree yourselfand you drop a branch on your car?

Or worse, on your neighbors car?

A professional tree service will carry liability insurance that will provide coverage for those accidents.

Other things a professional can do for you

Pet rescue

Our family pets have become more than just animals to us. Theyre our family members.

What happens if your fur child (e.g. your cat) gets stuck in a tree?

Sure, they got up there, but sometimes, they need a little help getting down.

A professional can safely get your furry friend down in no time.

Stump grinding

Sometimes when a tree is removed, the stump is left behind.

You might want it removed so you can plant a new tree, or because its just unsightly.

A professional arborist will have the tools to remove whats below the ground, too.

Asthma Relief How To Live With A Pet That's Making You Sick

There are several ways to prevent or minimize allergy and asthma attacks caused by your cat, dog or pet. For many asthma and allergy sufferers their worst trigger is quite often the family pet, which can be the cause of a severe and even life threatening asthma attack. But take heart, you don't have to give up your much loved pet for adoption, there are several things you can do to make living together happier plus get relief from asthma and allergy symptoms. Many people are unaware that it's their pet's dander (tiny flakes of dry skin) rather than the animal's hair that causes all of their problems. Chances are, if you can see pet hair on your carpet or floor, your home is overloaded with microscopic dander, which your cat, hamster or dog etc. sheds continuously. The tiny flakes of dander float in the air and easily sticks to almost anything including your hair, clothing, fabrics, carpets and drapery. If you allow your pet into your bed or bedroom then you can be sure that your sheets, pillows, mattress, drapes, carpets contain lots of dander too.

Fortunately there are several things that you can do. Using an Ultra HEPA vacuum cleaner and air cleaner is important to reduce levels of airborne dander. Next, steam cleaning rugs and furniture is essential to get rid of dander deposits in rugs and upholstry. Consider removing rugs and carpets and replacing them with laminate or tile if possible. In the allergy or asthma sufferers bedroom, wash all bedding, floors and walls to remove the dander and make this room a no pet zone. Then use a HEPA air purifier at night in their bedroom with the door closed.

Pet cleanliness and grooming is also important. Weekly shampoos at a pet groomer (if you can afford it) or simply washing your pet outside regularly will help keep the dander level as low as possible. Keeping long haired pets clipped shorter also helps a lot. If your pet loves to lick you, be sure to wash afterwards and avoid letting them lick your face. Pet saliva contains dander as well as proteins, which are also a major trigger for many allergy and asthma sufferers.

Perhaps you don't have a family pet, but your relative or best friend has a cat that makes you ill even after a short visit. Worse, most children can't resist touching and playing with pets even when they know it will make them sick. When you return home, limit your exposure to the dander by taking a shower and washing your garments.

Living with your beloved pet can be comfortable and symptom free when taking all of these measures. However, if your situation is more serious and your pet still makes you sick, then you may want to try an effective natural asthma relief remedy.

Asthma In Dogs - Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Although it is a rare occurrence, dogs can and do come down with asthma. Symptoms of asthma in dogs typically include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, which are the same symptoms that humans experience. If your pet is showing these signs, getting in touch with your veterinarian for an exam and diagnosis is the next step.

How is asthma in dogs diagnosed?

To determine if your canine has this lung disease, the veterinarian must first rule out other diseases. These may include:

- Kennel cough Infection

- Trachea collapse

- Paralyzed larynx

- Cardiovascular disease Heart

- Lung worms Fungus

- Lung tumors

First, your dog will undergo a physical examination conducted by the vet, who may then order a chest x-ray and bronchoscopy. Bronchoscopy involves retrieving a tissue sample to be analyzed under a microscope. After testing is completed and if no other reasons for your dog's symptoms can be found, the diagnosis is usually asthma. You vet will prescribe asthma medications for your pet to see of these improve symptoms. If they do, then it is a good probability your dog has asthma.

How is it treated?

The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and keep your pet healthy. If your dog is diagnosed with asthma, treatment will consist of:

Antihistamines - Reduces mucus in the airways Steroids - To control inflammation Bronchodilators - Help to reduce the swelling associated with an asthma attack Any combination of the above

These medications can be taken in pill form or inhaled. The inhaled form is given via a mask that is put over the dog's muzzle (mouth) and nose. The prescribed amount of medication is squeezed into the spacer while your dog inhales. The dosage prescribed by your vet is individual to your canine. Dosages may need to be adjusted until the right amount, or combination of medications is found.

In the event of a severe asthma attack, you may need to give your dog an injection of epinephrine. This is a rapid acting treatment that quickly reduces the inflammation and swelling associated with asthma attacks. Your vet will give you full instructions on how to give this life-saving injection to your dog in case it is needed.

Asthma in dogs is a highly treatable condition. When you know the warning signs of an attack and treat the symptoms early, you can prevent the attack from getting out of control and possibly save your pet's life.

ASPCA Pet and Dog Insurance Review

ASPCA Dog Insurance

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a 140 year history of protecting the lives of animals, especially dogs. The ASPCA has now expanded that protection to cover the health of family dogs. Illness or injury can strike unexpectedly, and having this protection for your dog will help ensure that proper treatment and your peace of mind.

The policies written by ASPCA Dog Insurance not only help to protect your dog, but are used by the society to help animals everywhere. The ASPCA maintains the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, to provide help and information if your dog swallows poison.

ASPCA Dog Insurance has 4 levels of protection for you to choose from. They also offer Continuing Care in levels 2 to 4 if your dog needs help with long-term or chronic conditions. All information here will be based on quotes for a young, healthy dog.

The most basic policy offered is the Level 1, which costs $11.00 per month. This policy covers accidents only. There is a per accident limit of $2,500 and a maximum benefit of $8,000 annually.

The next step up is Level 2, which covers not only accidents, but illnesses also. Covered at this level are prescriptions, lab tests, x-rays, illness treatment, diagnostics, surgery, and hospitalization. This policy also has a maximum yearly payout of $8,000. The Continuing Care Option is available at this level, and this policy will cost $27.22 per month.

Level 3 coverage adds wellness to the accident and illness benefits. This refers to some vaccinations (rabies, coronavirus, and distemper), spay or neuter, a physical exam, and heartworm testing. Continuing Care is available for your dog here, too. The benefits also rise, with a yearly maximum now of $11,000 and an incident benefit of $3,500. This policy will cost the dog owner $46.30 monthly.

The highest policy offered is Level 4, which covers accidents, illnesses, wellness, and also wellness plus. This level provides a dental cleaning, heartworm medicine, bordetella vaccine, and Lyme vaccine. Once again there are benefit increases as the annual benefit goes to $13,000 with an incident benefit of $5,000. The monthly cost of this policy is $77.36.

ASPCA Dog Insurance has a $100 deductible for all four levels of policy. The dog owner can choose their own veterinarian, so can deal with someone familiar and trusted. Payment is made to the veterinarian at the time of service, and then a claim is submitted to the ASPCA via email, fax, or mail. These policies will reimburse 80% of covered charges. ASPCA Dog Insurance will cover your dog anywhere in the United States or Canada.

The dog owner should be aware that there are conditions that are not covered with any of their policies, and these include (among other things) congenital disorders, hereditary diseases, pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, and experimental treatments. Before buying any dog insurance policy, check to see what is covered and what is not.

Animals And Birds Should Be Cage Free

Animals And Birds Should Be Cage Free

Animals And Birds Should Be Cage Free

It probably began in the past when man began to understand the beauty of animals. Coupled with his power over them, he probably decided that he wanted to have the beautiful animals that he had encountered on his hunting trips to be near him. Through the centuries, man has domesticated quite a few animals to serve his needs, and sometimes to serve no need at all. It is one thing to keep an animal nearby to serve one's needs but it is cruel to want to keep them 'just for fun'. Hence, keeping animals and birds in cages is quite ridiculous if not cruel.

It is most definitely cruel to keep any animal or bird in captivity; worse still confined in cages. An animal or bird is so carefree in its own environment. It knows of no restrictions. It goes about its own business of eating and drinking and creating babies. Even domestic animals would like to walk about and act according to their instincts and desires. Caging them would deprive them of this. How often have we seen caged animals pacing their cages in futile attempts to escape? Can we imagine the frustration that they feel? What do we get in making a creature furious, frustrated and depressed? Yet humans do it all the time. Since we would think it cruel if someone were to cage us, it stands to reason that we should not do it to others, even animals and birds. The sense of justice we hold so dear when it comes to humans should be extended to all living creatures.

Besides being cruel, it serves little purpose to want to cage animals and birds. Wild animals and birds being caged up serve our egoistic pleasure of power over others and that's about all that we do. Cultivating such natures does not do us any good; actually developing such natures will make us cruel and egoistic. Left in the wild a bird does all sorts of things; when kept in the cage, it just sits there. Granted that birds are beautiful to look at, we cannot observe the bird at its best when it is caged. To watch the bird at its best we should go to its habitat. Caging domestic animals just serves the purpose of controlling them. If we cannot look after them, why acquire them in the first place?

Finally, we have no right to do this; we do it because the creatures are powerless to prevent us from confronting them. If we are robbed of such rights, we would rather die than yield. Only in the cruelest of regimes are men and women confined only because the government - good or otherwise - feels that they are threats to their power or to the country. By what right then do we imprison animals and birds without any qualms?

Wild animals should be left free in their habitats and domestic animals should be given as much freedom as possible. The only reason for caging birds and animals is when they are a danger to themselves or to others. Nevertheless, wild animals and birds should never be captured in the first place.

Spat is the name of the offspring of oysters

Poult is the name of the offspring of turkeys

Lamb, lambkin and teg is the name of the offspring of sheep.

Cygnet is the name of the offspring of swans.

As you may have noticed several of the animals have a couple of names for their young such as the beaver who has young that are known as kits or pups. Donkeys young can be called foal or colts. Fox young can be called cubs, kits or whelps. Hogs offspring can be called piglets or shoat. Horse offspring can be called foal, colt (male) or filly (female), A rabbits offspring can be called kit or kittens. Seals offspring can be called pups or whelp.

So next time your grand child asks what is a baby giraffe called you will know it is a calf. Good luck with all the other questions they will come up with.

Animal Lovers Show They Care With A Pet Sympathy Card

Animal Lovers Show They Care With A Pet Sympathy Card

The world over it seems are animal lovers so sending a Pet Sympathy card to those who lose a loved animal is almost second nature.

Hallmark one of the leading Pet sympathy card publishers has been printing these cards since 1984. One of their releases states that "Almost six in 10 American households include a pet, compared to one in three that includes a child. No wonder that dogs and cats are more than mere companions - they're part of the family"

They go on further to comment.. "According to research by the Animal Hospital Association, 79 percent of pet owners give holiday or birthday presents to their pets. More than half of dog owners (55 percent) view themselves as the parents of their pets, and some 62 percent sign cards and letters from themselves and the pet". It's little wonder then they rose to the challenge of creating a special category to enable friends and relatives to send their condolences on the loss of such a beloved 'family member'. The Pet Sympathy Card category has reached new heights of interest.

There will be few of us who haven't been touched at some point in our lives by the love of an animal. The majority of us have experienced caring for a pet as a child. In fact it may seem almost obligatory to have at least one pet as a youngster. The animal shops are full of an abundance of creatures hoping that a generous passer-by will give them a good home. However, being able to buy and then care for an animal don't go hand-in-hand.

Being the owner of a pet is not easy. It may start out easy enough. We buy a few basic animal care products, create a safe sleeping and playing area and immerse ourselves in animal care books. The libraries and book shelves are full of 'how to care for your pet' books.

Over the years we may well give up holidays because we can't leave our pet. Perhaps we have limited our time away - relying on neighbors or friends to come in and care for our beloved creature. We may make a song and dance of their birthday and have one or two animals from the same family living together as a family unit.

The wealth of animal shows on television confirms that yes, as a nation we are besotted, often caring more for them than our fellow human being.

So we know that caring for an animal takes time and commitment. We almost don't begrudge the cost of vaccinations or pet care. And many of us don't budget for it.

We buy, or acquire our pet and then we give it hours of our unstinting love and attention. We take care to feed it soundly, walk it as necessary. Or at the very least we inquire into how to exercise it and keep it in the peak of health.

Our commitment is so consuming that the end when it comes is hard to bear.

Writing a sensitive Pet Sympathy Card to someone going through this loss can offer them some comfort and support.

It's not just the cat and dog owners who would welcome such a card. Think of all the different species of animals out there from horses to hamsters and goldfish to guinea pigs. Some sites offer Bird Loss and Pet Rat Loss cards, and include Ferret and Rabbit Loss in their extensive ranges.

There will be a card perfect for you to send to any grieving pet owner. If you can't find the perfect printed sympathy card take a look at the thousands of blank cards. There are many options to choose from. There are sites that specialize in animal cards and some of the Sympathy Card sites have sections on animal loss.

You may want to give something more substantial than a card. This can help the owner to remember them in their homes, or help them to mark their final resting spot with a permanent memorial. Whatever you decide, the first step is to acknowledge the passing of a much loved animal with a carefully chosen Pet Sympathy Card.

Andy Warhol's Cats & Dogs

Andy Warhol's Cats & Dogs

In 1954, Andy Warhol, a renowned cat lover, published a series of 25 cat portraits in book form. Printed on limited edition, hand-colored Arches watermarked paper, the prints were privately printed and made as a Christmas keepsake. He named his book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy. He had originally meant it to read "... Named Sam" but his mother, who did the lettering, left off the "d" and Warhol thought that the final version was fine.

In the 1950s, Warhol bought a brownstone where he and his mother resided. And, although they had owned cats for twenty years, his series of cat portraits were not based on the cats he lived with and knew. Instead, they were based on the photographs of New York Cat Photographer Walter Chandoha.

In the 1970s, Warhol 's interest with cats faded and his interest in dogs rose. His boyfriend decided they should get a short-haired Dachshund puppy. They named the dog "Archie". Warhol became so enthralled with Archie that he became his alter ego. As he held Archie during interviews, when Warhol did not want to answer a particular question, he would simply deflect the questions to Archie. Warhol took the dog everywhere - to his studio, to art openings, to dinner, to photo shoots, and to London when his work took him there.

When Archie was almost three, another Dachshund came into the picture. This dog, they called "Amos". The three of them got along famously. Amos and Archie would run around the townhouse barking, chasing and playing with one another while providing constant entertainment for Warhol. All was well, except now Archie would stay at home with his newfound friend Amos instead of gallivanting the city with Warhol.

In 1976, the art collector Peter Brant commissioned Andy Warhol to paint his Cocker Spaniel named Ginger. Andy made two paintings of Ginger, as well as drawings. Peter Brant liked these so much that he thought Warhol should do a whole series of cat and dog drawings. Andy liked the idea too. It would open up a new area of commission portraits and would give him a chance to use Archie and Amos in his work. All he lacked was a cat that would fit the modeling mold.

Warhol liked to work from photographs. He had a difficult time staging his pets and having them remain still. He decided to use stuffed animals for his first cat and dog photos. Vincent Fremont at Artnet called the finished paintings of these stuffed creatures "spooky and macabre". The paintings; however, that Warhol completed from photographs of cats and dogs are said to be vibrant and infused with personality.

After some time he began dabbling in other arts, including underground films that explored the shock value of nudity, greed, and sexuality. In 1976, after his hiatus from regular, mainstream art pursuits, Peter Brant arranged for Warhol's dog and cat series to be shown in New York and in London.

After Warhol's period of drawing and painting cats and dogs, he started on artistic renditions for Campbell soup cans and his focus on pop-culture as seen in his works centered around Marilyn Monroe. After his mother's death, Warhol became more distant from the public's eye. Warhol left his diaries behind that were later published into a book. While many say his entries are "mundane", those who study his art find that they leave a history - a post-modern history much reflective of his beliefs, ties to, and a life dedicated to explorative arts.
